Hospitals of the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital district and Hospital Districts within the treatment area of responsibility of the Oulu University Hospital (OYS)

Northern Finland is geographically large and sparsely populated and provision of services for its residents presents a challenge. OYS responds to the challenge by enhancing resource use, developing the division of labour, and increasing co-operation.

  • The district consists of 29 member municipalities (blue area)
  • about 410,000 inhabitants (740,000 in the treatment area of responsibility of OYS)
  • 12 % of Finland's surface area (the treatment area of responsibility of OYS covers 51 %)
  • 139,000 patients, 50,000 treatment periods, 630,000 outpatient visits per year
  • about 7,000 employees
  • operational costs about 655 million euros per year
