​Oulu University Hospital

​Oulu University Hospital (OYS) is the northernmost of five university central hospitals in Finland. The hospital currently provides treatment for the people in the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District and northern Finland in general. It also offers medical services to Scandinavia and other parts of the world.

The hospital utilizes the latest international knowledge and equipment in all specialized branches of medicine. Its' various departments and wards employ a total staff of more than 7.000 highly trained professionals, including world-class surgeons and experts. The hospital has the capacity to handle the most demanding emergencies and the Intensive Care Unit is one the best in Europe.  Special emphasis is placed on personal treatment for each patient.

Oulaskangas hospital, Oulainen

Oulaskangas Hospital in Oulainen treats patients in need of specialised medical care in cooperation with Oulu University Hospital. We provide care in surgery (orthopaedics and urology), gynaecology and obstetrics, internal medicine and pulmonary disease clinics and wards as well as outpatient clinic services for ear, nose and throat disease and paediatric patients.

In addition to emergency specialty care, the hospital bears responsibility for emergency primary care in the neighbouring region for evenings, night time and weekends.

Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease Unit hosts also the Haemodialysis Unit and heart monitoring facilities. Day Hospital Procedure Unit performs gastroscopies, gastrointestinal endoscopies, bronchoscopies and cystoscopies.

We perform knee and hip replacement surgeries, day surgery procedures and operations in the fields we specialise in. The Surgery Unit performs emergency operations in the evenings and weekends.

We can provide x-ray, physiotherapy and laboratory services.

The hospital is a teaching hospital and cooperates with Oulu University Faculty of Medicine and Oulu University of Applied Sciences.​​

Care and Welfare of Persons with Developmental Disabilities  

The Division of Care and Welfare of Persons with Developmental Disabilities of the Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District as a Centre of Expertise for Demanding Special Services complements and supports municipal services by providing the services requiring specialised competence for persons with developmental disabilities in the region.  Our mission is to support persons with developmental disabilities for living at home and to respond to clients' need of services by providing, when necessary, comprehensive just-in-time assistance. Our goal is to ensure efficient service chains between neighbourhood, primary and specialised services.

We offer our clients medical examinations and rehabilitation assessments and also care, crisis and rehabilitation services. Moreover, we provide also professional consultations and training. Functional rehabilitation, autism competency, psychiatric competency for developmental disorders, psychosocial rehabilitation, behaviour analysis, AAC guidance and sexual guidance are our key competencies.

The Division of Care and Welfare of Persons with Developmental Disabilities provides services in adult, paediatric and adolescent rehabilitation. The service is implemented at the Centre of Expertise or in the client's everyday setting.

Client-orientation, individualisation, right of self-determination and involvement are the cornerstones of our work. The focus is on good life for the developmentally disabled.

 Service divisions

The Diagnostics Division

The Diagnostics area of responsibility is part of the Oulu University Hospital. The Diagnostics area serves outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, and emergency units.  We have six radiology departments as well as nuclear medicine, clinical neurophysiology, and pathology units. Our assignment is to provide diagnostics services for the region of Northern Finland.

NordLab laboratory

​In Northern Finland, laboratory services in specialised healthcare have been concentrated within the NordLab laboratory consortium established by the hospitals of the region.
